Boeing 737 Max Update: Concerns and Incidents
737 Max Usage and Incidents
As of May 2023, approximately 222 Boeing 737 Max aircraft are still in operation. In January 2021, the first 737 Max 200 was delivered to its inaugural customer, Southwest Airlines. Since then, all new deliveries have been of the Boeing 737 Max, with some Ryanair subsidiaries also operating other aircraft types.
In recent news, two US airlines have discovered problems with the rear fuselage of their Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft, following an incident where a portion of the fuselage broke away mid-flight.
Boeing 737 Max History and Controversies
The Boeing 737 MAX is the latest iteration of the popular 737 family of narrow-body airliners. It was first announced in August 2011 and was designed to compete with the Airbus A320neo family.
However, the 737 MAX has been plagued by a series of safety concerns and incidents. In March 2019, a 737 MAX crashed shortly after takeoff in Ethiopia, killing all 157 people on board. This crash, along with another fatal crash in Indonesia in October 2018, led to the global grounding of the 737 MAX for 20 months.
Ongoing Challenges for Boeing
Following the grounding, Boeing has been working to address safety concerns and improve the 737 MAX. The company has stopped deliveries of some 737 Max aircraft due to manufacturing issues, and has come under scrutiny for allegedly prioritizing profits over safety in the development of the aircraft.
The recent incidents involving fuselage problems raise further questions about the safety of the 737 MAX and have led to growing concerns among passengers and aviation experts. The long-term impact of these incidents on Boeing's reputation and the future of the 737 MAX remains to be seen.
