The Minnesota North Stars: A Long History in the NHL
From Expansion to Success
The Minnesota North Stars were one of the six teams created during the National Hockey League's first expansion in 1966. This expansion brought the NHL to new cities across North America. The North Stars were the first major professional sports team to be based in Minnesota.
A Memorable Era
The North Stars played their home games at the Metropolitan Sports Center in Bloomington, Minnesota, from 1967 to 1993. During their 26 seasons in the NHL, the North Stars made the playoffs 14 times and won four division titles. They also reached the Stanley Cup Final in 1981, but lost to the New York Islanders.
A Change of Scenery
In the fall of 1993, the North Stars were sold and relocated to Dallas, Texas, where they became the Dallas Stars. The move was a controversial one, as many Minnesota fans were disappointed to see the team leave. However, the Stars have gone on to have success in Dallas, winning the Stanley Cup in 1999.
A Lasting Legacy
The Minnesota North Stars were a beloved team in the state of Minnesota for over two decades. Their success on the ice and their passionate fan base made them one of the most popular teams in the NHL. Though the team is no longer in Minnesota, their legacy continues to live on through the memories of their fans.
